100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Corine Mauch

Recently elected as the first openly gay female Mayor in Continental Europe, Corine Mauch has an ambitious agenda for the City of Zürich. Her platform focuses on ecology and sustainability, renewable
energy sources, quality of life issues, and positioning Zürich as both a classic and an experimental European cultural center. Having won the election with 56% of the votes, Mauch says, “I would not have run for office if I would have been forced to hide being lesbian. Fortunately this is not necessary in Zürich in 2009. Today it is an obligation for gays and lesbians in politics to stand by their orientation.” Born in the United States and a resident of Zürich for the past 25 years, Mauch worked for the Bureau of the National Parliament and was a Member of the Parliament of the City of Zürich before running for elected office. – KD
