100 Women We Love: Class of 2009
Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.
Peggy Moore
In 2001 Peggy Moore initiated “Sistahs Steppin In Pride,” what has become the annual East Bay Dyke March, enhancing visibility for Oakland’s LGBT community and providing a space for cultural and artistic expression in the heart of the city. Noting that Oakland is the U.S. city with the largest number of lesbians per capita, Moore felt compelled to rally the community. “Our festival includes families and we march in the middle of the day, in the heart of Oakland.” Peggy’s career spans over twenty-five years of public affairs and organizing experience, in both the corporate and non-profit sectors. Her latest endeavor, Moore for Oakland, a community-building project inspired by her work on the Obama campaign, demonstrates her commitment to changing the world right where she is. -KD
