100 Women We Love: Class of 2009
Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.
Sassafrass Lowrey
Sassafrass Lowrey is the Program Coordinator at Queens Pride House, the LGBT center of Queens, where she plans events and manages relationships with other organizations in the borough. Being kicked out of her family’s Oregon home after coming out at age 17 inspired Lowrey to get involved in community organizing. When she and her partner moved to New York City in 2007, she spent a year doing young adult media work for GLAAD. “I enjoyed organizing on a national level, but really missed the opportunity to interface with community members on a daily basis,” Lowrey says, “When I got the job at Queens Pride House I was thrilled to have the opportunity to go back to my roots.” Also a writer and performer, Lowrey edited the forthcoming anthology Kicked Out, which features work by many formerly homeless queer youth. “Kicked Out has been something I have dreamed about since I was 17. This was the book I needed at that point in my life.” -CB
