100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Dr. Darcy Smith

GO Magazine’s own Dr. Darcy Smith has been a practicing clinical social worker for 13 years. Forming Alternatives Adolescent Counseling Center just two years into her career, her practice works with LGBT clients in New York and New Jersey. In addition to providing clinical services, Alternatives works with high schools in the surrounding communities teaching staff and administrators how to create and maintain a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQ
students. Dr. Darcy makes sure that the schools have a Gay-Straight Alliance. If they don’t have one, she will mentor students on how to start one. And she’s not done there. Her future goals include starting a lesbian mentoring program
in the New York City area, and she’s currently brewing a blog, lesbianjourneys.com, expected to be launched by mid-summer. Dr. Darcy is
a proud member of Human Rights Campaign, GLSEN, Stonewall Quarter Share, GLAAD, and Out Professionals. –KD

Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
