100 Women We Love: Class of 2009
Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.
Oraia Reid
Oraia Reid is the co-founder and Executive Director of RightRides for Women’s Safety, a non-profit organization dedicated to the eradication of gender-based harassment. With the motto “Because Getting Home Safely Shouldn’t Be A Luxury,” RightRides currently serves 45 neighborhoods in New York City, offering free rides home to women and LGBTQ persons on Saturday nights between the hours of midnight and 3 a.m. “I co-founded RightRides in direct response to an increase in assaults targeting women walking home by themselves in North Brooklyn neighborhoods,” Reid says, “I was outraged by the attacks in my community and felt compelled to take action.” Reid’s work with RightRides has been acknowledged by a number of organizations, and she received the Rising Star award from the New York Women’s Agenda. Reid says plans are underway to bring RightRides to more American cities. -CB
