100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Rachel Maddow

Yep, it’s true. Everyone loves Rachel Maddow. Maddow is the first openly gay woman to host a primetime television news show, The Rachel Maddow Show. Her intellectual prowess, political acumen, and sharp wit are unmatched by any of her male counterparts. First coming to national attention as the host of her self-titled radio show on Air America, she has skyrocketed to success and in the process has become both a gay and American icon. She has de-throned Larry King Live, beating the long running CNN stalwart in the ratings, especially in the coveted age 25 to 54 demographic. In 2008, Maddow was a lead political analyst for MSNBC’s presidential election coverage, garnering nationwide attention and critical acclaim. Maddow was named “Breakout Star of 2008” by the Washington Post, and “Best of Television 2008” by the Los Angeles Times. Rachel earned her doctorate at Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. She is currently working on a book on the changing role of the military in U.S. politics. -KD

Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
