100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Kelly McGillis

Kelly McGillis may have played the strict, closeted lesbian Colonel Gillian Davis on the L Word, but the actress has just recently come out of the closet in real life. In an interview for journalist Jennifer Corday’s video blog, Girl Rock on Shewired.com, McGillis said she was currently single, and that she was looking for a relationship with a woman. Later commenting on the difficulty of accepting that it is possible to be both spiritual and gay, she said, “Life is a freaking journey, and it’s about growing and changing, and coming to terms with who and what you are, and loving who and what you are.” Well known for her role as Tom Cruise’s love interest in the classic 1986 movie Top Gun, the versatile actress and mother of two is currently starring in Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes at the Pasadena Playhouse. -CM

Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
