100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Angelique Irizarry

Angelique Irizarry has drawn upon her love of sports and her longtime work with renowned women’s event company Shescape to create the fabulously successful Diva Dodgeball Beach Tournament. A high school physical education teacher and volleyball and softball coach by day, she says events of this kind “signal a shift in traditional New York nightlife offerings, taking girls out of the city for something healthy, outdoors and fun.” Diva Dodgeball is also designed to raise funds for important causes and organizations, including breast cancer awareness and the Hetrick-Martin Institute. Angelique says “the event is an opportunity to step away from the grind of New York for a fun and campy game of dodgeball on the beach.” Two tournaments are scheduled this summer; one in Asbury Park the last weekend of July, and a second is planned for Fire Island’s Cherry Grove at the end of August. -CB

Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
