100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Sandy Young

Out rocker and mother of two teenagers, Sandy Young is one of this season’s top ten finalists on TV Land’s She’s Got the Look, a competition for women over 35 vying for a chance to win a contract with Wilhelmina Modeling Agency. She is also the lead singer and
guitar player for the indie Brooklyn band WhoButShe. Young, now 36, came out of the closet at 30, leaving an abusive ten-year marriage and finding strength in her new identity. She says, “All my life I’ve loved women, but I came from a very small town and a conservative family in upstate New York. I did what my family expected me to do.” Young says she would like to be
a spokesperson, helping other women in similar
situations, as she knows how hard it is to come
out. “I’m happier now,” she says, “and my kids are happier too.” -CB

Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
