100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

JD Disalvatore

Lesbian film producer and blogger
JD Disalvatore was recently honored for her community involvement
with a prestigious LACE (Lesbians and bisexual women Active in Community Empowerment) Award from the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. Active in everything from marriage equality to the rights of LGBT people serving in the military, she says, “When you look at the
fact that the teen suicide rate for
LGBT youth is four times that of
heterosexual youth and around seven LGBT people are either viciously attacked or killed a month in this country, those of us that
can do a little something…should, because we owe it to our brothers and sisters.” Among her many credits, Disalvatore produced the 2007 film Shelter, which recently won the GLAAD Media Award for Oustanding Feature Film in Limited Release and she runs the snarky LGBT politics and entertainment blog, TheSmokingCocktail.com. She is currently producing the lesbian feature A Marine Story, which deals with the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. -CB

Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
