100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Jackie Monahan

Comedian Jackie Monahan says she’s had great experiences being an out comic, appearing on Olivia cruises,
at Pride events and on LOGO’s One Night Stand Up. She says, “I have encountered the most support from lesbian comedians. I find the camaraderie extraordinary!” In 2008, she was nominated for ECNY’s “Best Female Standup Comedian” award and received the “Joke of the Year” honor from Time Out New York. The hilarious and often disarming comedian says audience members sometimes don’t believe she’s gay. “I will come off stage and be asked ‘You’re not really a lesbian, are you? You just do it for the act?’ But then they see my girlfriend and they realize, yes, I am a lesbian!” –CB
