NADINE SMITH

Executive Director, Equality Florida

Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, which advocates for LGBT rights throughout the state, boasts a long career in the nonprofit sector. She was executive director of the organization’s prede- cessor, the Human RightsTask Force of Florida; one of the co-chairs of the historic 1993 March on Washington; and recently was a co-chair of the National Equality March (see our coverage on this elsewhere in this issue). Smith has also served as a member of the Democratic National Committee; as co-chair of the Equality Federation; and as a campaign manager for Citizens for a Fair Tampa; her resume even includes a run for Tampa City Council in 1991. She has received recognition for her accomplishments from a host of organizations including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and Human Rights Campaign. Smith stresses that Equality Florida brings together a variety of local Florida groups working to eliminate discrimination based on sexual orientation. “Not only do we lobby for equal rights,” Smith says, “we empower and prepare people to be voices for equality.”
