Atlanta Hosts Global Black Pride 2024

Global Black Pride is coming to Atlanta this year!

GBP is known as the world’s first and only pride event dedicated to the black LGBTQ+ community worldwide. This year will be the first time the event is coming to the U.S.

“We are honored and excited to bring Global Black Pride to the United States for the first time, choosing Atlanta as our host city,” Micheal Ighodaro, President of Global Black Pride, said in a statement. “Known for its deep roots in civil rights history and a vibrant sense of community, Atlanta is the ideal location to celebrate our diversity, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality and justice.”

The celebration will kick off on August 27 to September 2, presented by Atlanta Black Pride Weekend. It aims to amplify black queer voices and experiences and celebrate their culture.

“Atlanta proudly stands as the LGBTQ capital of the south and a champion for human rights, not only in our region but on a global scale,” Malik Brown, the City’s Director of LGBTQ Affairs, said in a statement. “We are honored to welcome the first-ever Global Black Pride gathering in the United States to the vibrant City of Atlanta.”

The event will feature dance parties, festivals and cultural programs, as well as a human rights conference.

In a release, GBP says the goal of the event is to “address the unique challenges faced by Black LGBTQI+ communities, including social injustice, discrimination, health disparities, and economic inequality.”

GBP was founded by Global Black Gay Men Connect with the goal of connecting the black queer community during COVID-19 lockdown. The first ever Global Black Pride was held in 2020 in collaboration with Grindr.

The organization held its first in-person pride event in Toronto last year.
