LESLIE J. CALMAN
Executive Director, Mautner Project:The National Lesbian Health Organization
Leslie J. Calman, executive director of Mautner Project:The National Lesbian Health Organization, came to nonprofit work from the academic community. She says that her experience as a professor at Barnard College led her to the social justice field. “I taught both political science and the then-emerging field of women’s studies. After 17 years teaching about social change, I decided I want to more actively DO social change, and left academics for the nonprofit world,” Calman says. Before joining Mautner Project in 2008, she served as executive vice president of Legal Momentum (formerly NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund) and as Vice President of External Relations for the International Center for Research on Women. The DC-based Mautner Project provides support services for local lesbian, bisexual and transgender women with cancer and educates healthcare providers nationally about the health needs of LBT women.
