Blush & Blu, the only lesbian bar in Denver, Colorado, has sadly announced it will be shutting its doors this weekend.
“As we close this chapter, I hope you carry Blush & Blu in your hearts, in the memories we’ve shared, and in the community we’ve built together,” owner Jody Bouffard shared on social media.
Blush & Blu, located on Colfax Avenue, opened in 2012 and stands today as one of the few remaining lesbian bars in the country. Saturday will mark the space’s final night of business.
Bouffard recalled moving to Denver 28 years ago, when lesbian bars were much more prevalent in the U.S.
“When I moved to Denver in 1996, there were over 200 lesbian bars across the country, each a beacon of refuge, though not always safe,” she wrote. “Many of us entered through the side door, our hearts guarded and steps careful. Now, 28 years later, only 20 remain. The world has shifted and so have we.”
Bouffard did not share a specific reason behind the bar’s closure, but did clarify that it was her decision to “close this chapter of [her] life called Blush & Blu.” She thanked every “promoter, performer, DJ, drag queen, drag king, comedian, poet, and artist” and every person who spent their night at the bar for their support and love through the years.
“You’ve filled this space with color, magic, and joy,” she said. “…[Y]ou built this home with your love, laughter, and energy. This place exists because of you.”
According to the Lesbian Bar Project, there are 33 lesbian bars across the country, accounting for Blush & Blu’s closure. The lack of a lesbian space will certainly be felt by the Denver community. More than 100 patrons and supporters have taken to the bar’s comments to express their grief.
“A huge loss not just for Denver but for the world!” one commenter exclaimed.
“My wife and I had our first kiss there,” another person remembered.
Blush & Blu will have a closing party on October 5. During the bar’s final few days, Bouffard asks patrons to celebrate “the memories, friendships, and love that have filled these walls for years.”
