THE CULTURAL ROADMAP FOR CITY GIRLS EVERYWHERE

The Queerest Moments of the 2024 VMAs

September 12, 2024

Here are the queerest moments of the VMAs that you'll want to relive again and again.

Last night, MTV held their 40th VMAs in New York, hosted by none other than bicon Megan Thee Stallion. The night was filled with multi-cultural music, celebrity appearances, unreal performances, and of course, queerness as far as the eye can see. Here are the queerest moments of the VMAs that you’ll want to relive again and again.

Chappell Roan Wins Best New Artist, Lights Stage On Fire

There were high hopes for Chappell Roan‘s first VMAs, and she absolutely delivered. Her looks throughout the night were an homage to Joan of Arc, from the sheer dress and medieval accessories on the red carpet to full armor during her performance to her final look: a chainmail hooded top and skirt.

To kick off her performance, she shot a flaming arrow into a castle, literally setting the stage on fire. During her acceptance speech for Best New Artist, she dedicated the award to the drag artists who inspire her (her performance was introduced by her official drag mother Sasha Colby) and sent a message to queer kids in the Midwest: “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t be exactly who you want to be, b*tch.”

Doechii and Katy Perry Scissor On Stage

Confirmed bisexual Doechii and “I Kissed A Girl” singer Katy Perry got especially intimate on stage, and so did the camera. During Katy Perry’s Video Vanguard performance, Katy performed a medley of her greatest hits, including “I Kissed A Girl,” and she debuted an unreleased song featuring Doechii called “I’m His He’s Mine.” Although the song seemed to be about how much they love men, the two had a sensual dance break that featured an upskirt camera angle, a full scissoring situation, and ended with an almost kiss (while Katy’s husband Orlando Bloom looked on and clapped).

Megan Thee Stallion Wins Awards, Hosts The Show, Performs In Japanese…What Can’t She Do?

Megan The Stallion needs to host every award show from now on. She knew how to bring the party and personality without leaning too far into the cheesiness of award shows. She also brought the looks, our favorite being her red carpet look.

Because it was the 40th anniversary of the VMAs, MTV made a point to honor iconic moments of award shows past, including the heart-stopping performance of I’m A Slave 4 U where Britney Spears carried a live snake. Megan came out in the full outfit plus the snake, but just for a few seconds before she rightfully requested to have the amphibian removed from her body.

To go along with the celebration of multicultural music, Megan brought Yuki Chiba all the way from Japan to perform their bilingual hit “Mamushi,” which won the Moonperson for Best Trending Video.

Anitta Wins Best Latin

Anitta, the Brazilian bisexual singer, put on a back-breaking performance, moving her body in ways we didn’t know was legal. Later in the night, she did her country proud by taking home Best Latin, and she made sure to shout out Brazil for always having her back.

Sabrina Carpenter Kisses Transgender Illegal Alien

The day after the internet went crazy over Trump’s claims that Harris wants to perform “transgender surgeries on illegal aliens in prison,” Sabrina Carpenter’s performance of her new single ‘Taste’ featured a love triangle between Sabrina, an astronaut, and what we can only assume is the transgender illegal alien that Trump was talking about.

Halsey’s Comeback Brings Back Punk

Only a few months after announcing her health scare, bisexual singer Halsey proves that even though her world has been rocked, she can still rock. Her performance of her song ‘Ego’ started with her riding her bike up to a garage, where she and her band played what looked like a scene from Freak Friday (2003), and we’re absolutely here for it.
