Crazy 8: Our Year in Review

Marriage Equality The battle for same-gender marriage raged on these past months, with Maine voters echoing the 2008 decision of California voters on Proposition 8 and choosing to take away marriage rights that had previously been given to gays and lesbians. On the upside, Vermont, Iowa, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia all passed laws allowing same-gender marriage in the past year. Connecticut and Massachusetts already have formalized gay marriage provisions.

Controversial lesbian feminist philosopher-theologian Mary Daly died this year at age 81. Daly was known for her prolific writings, having penned several highly influential 1970s radical feminist works including Beyond God the Father and Gyn/Ecology. Later in life, Daly’s public conflicts with other queer activists over her views about men, including gay men, and on trans issues threatened to overshadow her significant contributions to the fields of women’s and religious studies.
