Marriage Equality The battle for same-gender marriage raged on these past months, with Maine voters echoing the 2008 decision of California voters on Proposition 8 and choosing to take away marriage rights that had previously been given to gays and lesbians. On the upside, Vermont, Iowa, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia all passed laws allowing same-gender marriage in the past year. Connecticut and Massachusetts already have formalized gay marriage provisions.

Away From My Window

On April 15, a spokesperson confirmed that Melissa Etheridge and her partner of nine years Tammy Lynn Michaels have split. “We ask for consideration and respect for our family as we go through this difficult period,” the pair, who have two children, said in a statement to People.com. The 48-year-old singer of hits such as “I Wanna Come Over” and “Come To My Window” married Michaels in a September 2003 ceremony in Malibu, California. Tammy gave birth to their twins, son Miller and daughter Johnnie Rose, on October 17, 2006. Etheridge also has two children, Bailey, 13, and Beckett, 11, with her former partner Julie Cypher.
