This Lizzie McGuire Character Would’ve Been Queer In The Reboot

Hurwitz took to Tiktok on Monday to post a video about the character’s imagined future.

As a surprise to absolutely no one, it has been confirmed that Miranda Sanchez, Lizzie McGuire’s BFF, is queer. Unfortunately, we won’t get to see her queerness come to life in the reboot of Lizzie McGuire because the show was axed in 2020 due to Disney’s desire “to move in a different creative direction.”

Millennials everywhere were devastated that the beloved show wouldn’t grace the TV with an update about the characters, but luckily, Jonathan Hurwitz, who was a writer for the reboot, has been spilling tea about the show and its supposed storyline.

Hurwitz took to Tiktok on Monday to post a video about Miranda’s imagined future.

“We didn’t want fans of the original to feel like we’d abandoned that Miranda-Lizzie relationship. So we were absolutely planning a storyline for her. We talked a lot about adult Miranda, and her being a musician was part of the discussion, so someone who’s on tour with a band,” he said. “Her being queer was also part of the discussion, so you likely would have met the woman she was in a relationship with.”

I know I’m not the only one who thought it was totally obvious Miranda was queer from episode 1 of the original, but it’s nice to know our fictional friend is out there living her best life, playing music and kissing girls.

Miranda isn’t the only one who Jonathon spilled tea about. Lizzie, or Elizabeth as she would go by in the reboot, had become an interior designer in NYC– that is, until a breakup sends her back to her hometown. (Where animated Lizzie is waiting for her!)

The show creator, Terri Minksy, left the reboot in 2020 and the plans for the show fell through. Hilary Duff, who plays Lizzie McGuire, had said that she wanted the show to move to a different network. She said that the show would have been “doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating” on Disney+.

“I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today,” she wrote on Instagram. “It’s what the character deserves “We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her.”

Lizzie and Miranda, you are alive and well in our queer little hearts and imaginations.
