Out Artists on the Rise

What do a gender-bending opera diva, an innovative guitar virtuoso and a queer electro-rap group have in common? They’re all part of our profile of 16 unique out musicians on the brink of stardom

LadyBug

LadyBug, self-described as a “pop alternativo for attention deficit disorders,” has a sound with diverse influences, heard most notably on the jumpy, energetic, “Stop,” a pop-punk song infused with hard rock riffs and passionate vocals.

The lifelong Brooklynite’s musical journey began as a child when she learned to play the piano. She later gave up the instrument after the death of her mother. “I was on my own at a very early age, and my boyfriend at the time always had a guitar laying around, which I fell in love with the moment I picked it up, and then after playing it up for hours, days, weeks and months on end, I eventually taught myself how to make it tick.”

LadyBug has no worries about whether her honesty about her sexuality would affect her career. “I’m an asexual bisexual, so big deal. Art is art and love is love and their experience is universal. It is a common denominator as long as we are alive. If someone can’t appreciate something for what it is without pigeonholing it, that’s just petty.”

Currently, LadyBug and fellow musician Chris Brown are recording A Vein Inside a Quetzal’s Daze, which will be available in the fall. Check ladybugsorbit.com for updates and to preview audio samples.
