Pretty Boys

Galadriel Masterson and Hopey Rock are the sexy, punky androgy-dykes fronting Pretty Boys, currently spinning their way to the top on local college and Sirius satellite radio stations. In March their old friend P!nk created a “soundtrack for her life” on the UK’s ITV1 and chose their single “Hello Bonjour” as her favorite new track. Pink says, “I love this track, it makes me want to dance and scream.”

On a P!nk-streaked roll, Pretty Boys is one of three finalists chosen out of thousands of bands to compete in a contest sponsored by Glamour magazine and Nissan. The winner, to be decided by public vote (online at glamour.com/reelmusic through Aug 31), gets a music video directed by Pink. They may be the only unsigned band of the three, but Pretty Boys is on a huge roll thanks to their debut album Ghetto Rock, with a sound that’s textured and energetic, showing off Hopey’s adrenalin-pumping guitar riffs and Galadriel’s relentless melodic hooks. Ghetto Rock is as diverse as NYC, the city that inspires them, and is infused with insight.

“It’s not about being feminist,” says Masterson, “it’s about being an equalist…it’s not about being gay or straight, it’s about being a person lucky enough to have love.” Since the day Rock was homecoming queen and came out in a speech broadcasted to her New Jersey high school, she’s lived life “already assuming that we have rights. I know it’s something we have to fight for, but I refuse not to have them.”
