Queer comedian extraordinaire Fortune Feimster is currently on tour with her Live Laugh Love stand-up show. In an ultimate f*ck you move, Feimster is taking Live Laugh Love to red states where conservatives have enacted anti-queer, anti-trans, and anti-drag legislation. In Republican states like Florida, Montana, Tennessee, and more, conservatives have acted to ban queer history, books, drag shows, and gender-affirming health care. Luckily, there are many brave LGBTQ+ people in these states and LGBTQ+ supporters in blue states that are fighting back. And amid this political backdrop, Feimster dares to go be gay in these red states and provide some much needed, and potentially life saving, comedic relief.
“Going into some of these towns and cities where they don’t get as many comics or performers from the LGBTQ+ community, and they are just so starved for that, they really want to have people come in that they can relate to. When you go into [cities] like, a Chattanooga [Tennessee], or a Mobile, Alabama, or you know, Tulsa, Oklahoma, the response is so big,” Feimster tells Out. “I’m blown away when I come out onstage — the noise in that room.”
“I think a big part of that is that many of those people are finally feeling seen. They’re finally having someone in their town who is like them,” Feimster adds. “That means a lot to me to be able to go into those places and be that person. I wanted that when I was growing up in a 10,000-person town.”
Feimster will appear in red-state cities, including Tulsa, Omaha, and Des Moines on her Live Laugh Love tour.
“Now I’m in a full-circle moment where I’m this representation for certain people, and they’re finding things that they relate to in me just talking about my life and who I am. That does make a difference,” Feimster tells Out. “What an incredible by-product of just trying to make people laugh and telling your story.”
