Michael Bloomberg Suspends 2020 Presidential Bid

March 4, 2020

Michael Bloomberg first made waves when he entered the 2020 Presidential Race in late November 2019, snubbing early states.

Former Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg suspended his bid for the 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidacy Wednesday morning after a disappointing run on Super Tuesday. Bloomberg endorsed Joe Biden in his place.

Bloomberg spent a whopping $500 million on advertising for Super Tuesday and was banking on receiving at least a handful of delegates. While he did clinch victory in the American Somoa caucus, it wasn’t nearly enough to keep him in the race. The candidate gave no indication of his plans to suspend his run when addressing supporters in Palm Beach, FL Tuesday night.

“As the results come in, here’s what is clear: No matter how many delegates we win tonight, we have done something no one else thought was possible,” Bloomberg said in his speech Tuesday, according to Politico. “In just three months we’ve gone from 1 percent in the polls to being a contender for the Democratic nomination for president.”

What got Bloomberg on Super Tuesday wasn’t just his amount of spending that knocked the candidate down; Biden also seemed to clinch victory in locations where Bloomberg was hoping to win. Biden won by a landslide in Virginia, where Bloomberg’s team predicted he’d be a top choice. Bloomberg also had high hopes for Oklahoma, but found himself in third behind Biden and Sanders. The candidate was third or fourth in almost every state that voted on Super Tuesday.
