The start of a new year is a perfect moment to reflect on the highs and lows of the past while setting the tone for what’s to come. For many of our favorite queer women, New Year’s Day was a time to honor the lessons of 2024 and share their hopes for making 2025 the year of slayage—both personally and professionally.
From heartfelt posts about growth and resilience to glimpses of how they spent the first day of the year, here’s what some of our favorite celesbians and queer women were up to.
Tegan and Sara go off the grid
Indie-pop duo Tegan and Sara bid farewell to 2024 with gratitude, celebrating a year of touring, creativity, and collaboration. In a heartfelt message, they thanked the artists, fans, and their team for making the year memorable. “2024 was quite the year,” they wrote. “Grateful to all the people who supported the art we make and the Tegan and Sara team who supports everything we do.”
Looking ahead, the sisters announced a social media hiatus for 2025, sharing their plans to slow down and recharge. “It’s time to take our foot off the gas pedal, make some memories, see the world, and hopefully let our creative gardens grow,” they explained. While acknowledging the challenges of disconnecting, they expressed excitement for the opportunity to unplug. They ended their message with a warm send-off: “Best wishes and happy new year. Take care of yourselves and each other.”
Chloë Grace Moretz teases engagement
Congratulations may be in order for this happy couple! Chloë Grace Moretz shared a carousel of beautiful photos from this year, including a flick of her and her partner Kate Harrison holding hands on the beach with matching engagement rings. “Happiest New Year,” the 27 year old captioned the photos. “[S]o thankful for what this year has brought.” Moretz came out as gay in November of this year and confirmed her relationship with Harrison, who she has been linked to since 2018.
Jessica Betts gets airborne with Niecy Nash
Musician Jessica Betts welcomed 2025 in style, sharing some stunning drone footage to mark the occasion. “Happy New Year HELLO 2025. My drone was droning with majestic energy,” she captioned the video, which also features highlights from the past year spent with her wife, actress Niecy Nash.
Cynthia Nixon gets even more airborne
Gilded Age star Cynthia Nixon didn’t let a little thing like transcontinental travel get in the way of ringing in the new year with her family. “Nothing like celebrating New Year’s Eve on a 17-hour flight in seven different time zones,” she captioned her impressively festive cabin photo. She added: “The amazing crew set up a makeshift photo booth for passengers to celebrate!”
Haley Kiyoko makes moves
Singer, actress, and novelist Haley Kiyoko reflected on a transformative year in which “things finally started to align” with a 2024 highlights slideshow. Despite being “immensely offline,” she dedicated her time to directing “the movie of our dreams” and expressed excitement to share the journey with her fans. She also shared how the year brought her a sense of peace and confidence, saying, “For the first time in as long as I can remember, my body feels at ease. I’m exactly where I need to be.” Haley encouraged her followers to keep pushing forward, stating, “Whatever you are striving for and working towards is waiting for you on the other side. It’s yours. Never stop believing in yourself.” With optimism for 2025, she ended, “2025 here we gooo.”
Lena Waithe keeps it brief
Actress and writer Lena Waithe boiled her New Year’s message down to only the most essential words. “2024 was full of lows and highs,” she wrote, adding, “Here’s looking at you, 2025.” And here’s to keeping things simple! Waithe paired the note with a gorgeous portrait-style photograph.
Wanda Sykes cuts through the noise
Comedian Wanda Sykes spent the first day of the year on the beach with her wife, Alex. In a video she took mid-stroll, Wanda mused that she has a feeling “2025 is going to be about a lot of messages.” But over in her caption, she seems to know the most important one: “Love is the message. Let’s look out for each other…especially the most vulnerable of us.” Amen to that!
Cara Delevingne gives us a late Xmas gift
There was no reflective prose from model and actress Cara Delevingne — just a gift from her phone’s video folder. “This video speaks for itself. Happy 2025 everybody. This is a gift from me to you, one of my favorite moments of the year. This performance shook me to my core,” she wrote alongside clips of Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande covering Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston’s “When You Believe” at the 2024 Met Gala.
Cynthia Erivo lives the dream
And speaking of Ms. Erivo, the star reflected on an unforgettable year, acknowledging both the surprises and meaningful experiences that came her way. “I’ve had the privilege of meeting people from all walks of life,” she shared, noting the friends she made and the fleeting connections that left lasting impressions. Erivo also celebrated playing a dream role in Wicked and the joy of seeing others experience a sense of possibility. As she looked ahead to 2025, Erivo wished that the new year, with all its challenges, would surprise everyone with beautiful moments and gifts, both anticipated and unforeseen. “I wish that for me and for you,” she concluded.
Gillian Anderson is perfect. End of story.
Every year will have its ups and downs, but judging by actress Gillian Anderson’s New Year’s throwback video, her 2024 was heavy on the ups. And look, we fully understand that social media often presents an ultra-rosy version of reality. But since nothing bad should ever happen to Gillian Anderson, we’re just going to choose to believe it to be the full story.
