January 6 will forever be etched in history for the terrifying images that emerged from Washington, D.C. in 2021. But the date also happens to mark the anniversary of queer joy spreading across Florida — of all places!
While we must preserve the truth of that dark day when a mob stormed the Capitol, it’s also important to recognize and remember the moments of light that shine through.

Ten years ago on January 6, 2015, same-sex marriage became legal throughout Florida, leading to jubilant celebrations and mass wedding ceremonies. In Broward County, one woman captured the surreal excitement of the moment, exclaiming, “Can you believe that it’s happening?” before urging the crowd to “Pinch somebody sitting next to you. Make sure that it’s actually happening.”
About six months later, on June 26, the Supreme Court made same-sex marriage the law of the land. Here’s to all the steps, big and small, that got us there and all the steps left to climb.
