Like many of our Captivating Couples, Helen and Gloria matched up on OkCupid. But Gloria didn’t like to tell people. “We would just say we met through friends,” Helen says. Since then, Gloria has owned up to the truth, especially since the pair had an instant connection when they did meet in person. The first thing Helen noticed? Gloria’s “dark eyes behind her glasses and how they smile all on their own.” Gloria was struck by the way Helen “lit up when she smiled, and how much her curly hair bounced.” Though they hit it off right away, they came from different places. Gloria hadn’t come out yet to her Southern family; Helen had already been out for a decade. “Patience was key,” Helen says. “I did my best to support and encourage Gloria to be herself. It was a long road, but we made it. I knew she was strong enough, she just needed to trust herself.” Besides, one of the things that Helen loves most about Gloria comes from the South—her “darling” southern accent. The couple wed in November 2015 at New York’s City Hall. Helen will never forget “the sound of our family cheering as we took our first kiss as a married couple.” Gloria will never forget “the blue-haired justice of the peace.”
