Lucky 7: Our Seventh Year in Review

May 8, 2009

The 2008 elections filled our hearts with hope even while the economic downturn emptied our pockets. We spoke out against corporate greed, fought for our right to marry and shamed those that would hold us down into becoming more tolerant. A crane collapsed in Manhattan; a plane landed in the Hudson River and justice prevailed with the country's first transgender-related hate crime conviction. Here is a look back at the past year and the events that most affected us.

NN. DON’T EVEN ASK

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell reached an all-time
popularity low this year with major military officials questioning the usefulness of the policy. During a CNN appearance Colin Powell said DADT should be reevaluated; still, 11 servicemembers were booted from the military under the policy right before Obama took office. The soldiers were a last-minute discharge under the directives of the Bush administration. Obama has promised to review DADT but has yet to make a major move on it.
