Attention all SZA fans (and football fans, we guess)! Super Bowl LIX just got a lot more thrilling. With about two weeks left before the big game, halftime headliner Kendrick Lamar revealed SZA would be joining him on the stage.
Just days after SZA’s feature film debut in One of Them Days, a comedy produced by Issa Rae that has been doing numbers at the box office, Lamar shared the surprise addition.
In an announcement video, Lamar paces around a football field after finishing a grueling Super Bowl performance practice. “I’ve been thinking about a guest,” he says into his phone. Little does he know, SZA is sneaking up behind him.
The video cuts to a dramatic slow-motion shot of SZA dumping what we assume to be blue Gatorade all over him. Classic football shenanigans.
SZA reposted the video to her Instagram, confirming the collaboration to her fans. “Taking the stage with Kendrick Lamar!”
Fans flooded the comment section of the post, only adding to the hype of it all.
One fan commented, “Superbowl or SZAbowl?”
Another said, “SZA BOWL! I don’t watch football but I will now!”
Lamar’s recent album GNX featured SZA’s buttery vocals on “luther.” We hate to say it, but a live performance of this song could overshadow the actual game.
This year will mark Lamar’s second Super Bowl performance. He appeared alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent during the Super Bowl LVI halftime show.
The performance will be SZA’s debut on the football stadium stage. The “SOS” singer is having a massively successful year.
You can also catch her at the Grammys on February 2, where she has two nominations for her single “Saturn” in the best R&B song and performance categories. In April, she will hit the road with Lamar for their Grand National stadium tour.
Super Bowl LIX will take place on February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. It will also be televised nationally on FOX at 6:30 pm EST.
