Ayo Edebiri Serves Ultimate Final Girl In New A24 Horror Movie

January 22, 2025

'Opus' is coming to a theater near you March 14.

Ayo Edebiri is shedding her comedy chops (for now) and stepping into the role of horror’s newest Final Girl.

The bisexual comic, who starred in the 2023 queer coming-of-age film Bottoms and the award-winning series The Bear, will show off her versatility in A24‘s latest film Opus. We’ve never been so excited to watch someone scream.

The trailer, released Tuesday, follows Ariel (Edebiri), a young writer invited to the island of a reclusive pop star (John Malkovich). Oh wow, a fun vacation for this hard-working journalist. Ha. Wrong.

After landing on the compound, the first note our writer jots down is “creepy.” And we couldn’t agree more. We are introduced to a sea of cult-y super fans all dressed in blue, who eat blue lobster on one long table. You know, a typical Sunday dinner!

The trailer shows a few clips of the compound to increase the eeriness before we jump into downright terrifying, including Ariel being spied on, chased during her morning run, and told she is required to shave…everything without explanation.

It’s like Midsommar if Midsommar was a critique of cult-like celebrity culture.

By the end of the trailer, things have gone completely off the rails. We go from wondering if this pop star was secretly a member of the Blue Man Group (seriously, what’s up with the blue obsession?) to fearing for Ariel’s life as she hides in a bathtub gripping a weapon.

The pacing is immaculate and Edebiri shines as the girl you hope makes it out alive.

Opus is the directorial debut of Anthony Mark Green, who also wrote the film. Produced by Josh Bachove, Collin Creighton, and Brad Weston, the film will star Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Tony Hale, Tatanka Means, Young Mazino, Tamera Tomakili, and Stephanie Suganami.

Opus is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, with a nationwide theatrical release on March 14.
