Captivating Couples 2012

This year, we celebrate couples who have taken the plunge and tied the knot—legally. Hailing from the tri-state area and beyond, measuring the length of their relationships in months as well as decades, they embody what courage, commitment and love are all about.

Melissa & Amanda
Woodmere, NY
Melissa, 31, senior manager at a global advertising agency
Amanda, 31, assistant vice president at an investment bank

Melissa and Amanda met 12 years ago during their freshman year at Fordham University, a friendship that got closer when they shared a house senior year. “We danced around each other for years. Finally, in 2007, we started dating,” they remember. Amanda proposed to Melissa on November 6, 2010—before marriage equality in New York. They juggled the logistics of their wedding, hoping that New York would come around in time, and planning for an out-of-state event just in case. “We were going to get legally married in Massachusetts and have a spiritual ceremony on August 19…as the date got closer we saw that a legal marriage in New York might be possible,” they say. “We were thrilled when same-sex marriage became legal [here] just four weeks before our wedding!” They decided on an intimate ceremony at the Stone Mill at the New York Botanical Gardens, across the street from the university where they first met. Amanda says her favorite part of the ceremony “was when [I heard], ‘I now pronounce you wife and wife.’”
