Valentine’s Day Massacre
A 15-year-old Oxnard, California student died on February 12, 2008, from a gunshot to the head in an alleged hate crime. The victim, Lawrence King, was gunned down in his junior high school’s computer lab by Brandon McInerney, 14, after King allegedly asked McInerney to be his Valentine. King was reported to have been openly gay, to have dressed in feminine clothing and to have worn makeup to school. McInerney is awaiting trial. The tragedy has brought much-needed attention to the issues of bias and hate among junior high school students.
