AVE-MARIE & TIFFANY
Brooklyn, NY
Ave-Marie, 23, emergency medical technician
Tiffany, 27, Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and Peace Officer

Sparks flew when Ave-Marie and Tiffany met in 2009 at the medical facility where they both worked. “We fell hard for each other and knew almost instantly that we were meant to be together,” they agree. “My favorite thing about Marie is her brilliant mind and how sweetly she caters to me,” Tiffany says. Marie tells us, “Tiffany is an amazing person; she leaves a lasting impression on everyone she meets. My favorite thing is her kind, loving heart.” Like many of us, they´ve had to deal with some family members disapproving of their relationship. Fortunately, they´ve learned to navigate the situation and believe their loved ones are slowly coming around. “They were stuck in their traditional beliefs,” Marie says. “We overcame that because I never let my family feel like it was OK to disrespect us. I explained to them that I don´t need their approval, only their respect, and I assured Tiffany that my family doesn´t have the power to influence how I feel about her.” When DADT and DOMA were overturned, they set a date. They were married last August 19, and had a reception at our beloved Stonewall Inn. Both recall feeling elated and validated. “Although marriage didn´t change our relationship, knowing that our marriage would be fully recognized by the federal government as well as the United States military was an amazing feeling.”
