Brandi Carlile is reimagining her most recent album, and this one is for the Sad Gays.
The singer-songwriter announced on Thursday that her eighth studio album, Returning to Myself, is getting a new release with a new vibe.
“When I was a teenager, I loved to toy with my own emotions by actively seeking out songs in a genre that very few are willing to call by its rightful name. The ‘Sad Gay’ genre,” she shared via social media, namedropping the angsty songs she used to listen to growing up. “I would do this just to feel myself spiral into pure emotional self-indulgence in ways only music like this could permit… Making me a very sad gay.”
These emotions appear to be the impetus for her decision to record a reimagined version of Returning to Myself, which was originally released in October of last year.
“I reimagined this album in this way because I want to be brought back to the edge of my bed again and I want to bring you with me,” Carlile continued. “I rebuilt the whole thing for you and for myself. This one is for us… the sad gays wherever you are…”
This new take on her Billboard top 10 album will quite literally be called Returning to Myself (Sad Gay Version), complete with a track listing in rainbow-colored text, per the images shared to Instagram.
It’s a welcome update for a variety of reasons, but particularly in the wake of Carlile recently rescheduling the UK and European leg of her current tour due to “personal circumstances.”
Fans and peers alike have already expressed their enthusiasm for the relatable-sounding reimagining, frequently self-identifying as Sad Gays—or simply just sad.
“Although my sexual orientation is straight, I think my musical orientation may very well be sad gay,” one person commented.
“i STILL do the same thing,” fellow musician LeAnn Rimes chimed in. “my ‘hype’ music before i go on stage are the saddest songs ever.”
Returning to Myself (Sad Gay Version) will be released on September 25. Special edition vinyl copies are currently available for pre-order in Carlile’s store, with an expected ship date of December 11.
