Brandi Carlile Takes Over ‘Ted Lasso’ Theme Song for Season 4 Finale
The Grammy winner recently shared a look into the recording process.
Brandi Carlile has officially entered the Ted Lasso universe with a fresh take on the familiar theme song.
Viewers were in for a surprise during the season four finale this week when a different version of the theme song began to play. Throughout the series, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons has been the voice of the opening credits, but the latest episode featured Carlile’s rendition of the tune instead.
“When my dear friend @jasonsudeikis showed up at my show in London last summer with the entire cast of the women’s football team from Ted Lasso, I knew this season was going to be the best!” she wrote on Instagram Thursday morning. “So when he asked me to record a special version of the theme song, we were in the studio recording it together less than 48 hours later!”
The change is fitting—and possibly overdue—for the turn Ted Lasso took in season four. The first three seasons centered around the titular character (played by Sudeikis) moving to the UK to take over coaching duties for a struggling soccer club. Season four, however, turned its focus to Lasso coaching a newly formed women’s team.
“Jason has talked about for a while, that at some point the theme song should be presenting the change and what the show is now, from the men’s team to the women’s team, and we should have it being sung by a woman’s voice,” executive producer and co-star Brendan Hunt told Variety. He also shared that he “just bawled, absolutely bawled” the first time he heard Carlile’s full-length version of the song, which he refers to as “just staggering.”
In her Instagram post sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the recording process, Carlile also made sure to throw credit to “my buddy @marcusmumford for letting me borrow your song.”
The future of Ted Lasso is uncertain, as the series has yet to be renewed for a season five. However, if it returns, we’re rooting for Carlile’s take to stick around as well. You can check out the full version below:
