It comes after several hospital systems in the city have stopped care for trans youth.

New York City is planning to spend about $9 million to support gender-affirming care for youth in the city after several hospitals agreed with the Trump administration to halt such care.

It’s part of a $15 million investment in gender-affirming care that NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced in the summer.

NYU Langone and Mount Sinai both recently struck deals with the federal government to stop investigations into the hospitals, restricting access to gender-affirming care to many across the city.

The Department of Justice said those investigations were due to possible violations of federal health care laws related to gender-affirming care, according to local news outlet Gothamist.

All major medical associations in the U.S. support gender-affirming care for transgender minors.

According to a city procurement document, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene plans to potentially work with Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and the Nonprofit Organization for Philanthropic Initiatives as potential contractors. Health care services must be provided by medical providers with current NY state licenses. The care to provide includes puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy, according to the agency.

The contract for the services would be for three years and would begin February 1, 2027, according to the document.

“Transgender people of all ages deserve comprehensive healthcare that helps them thrive,” Patrick McGovern, CEO of Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, said in a statement to Gay City News. “At Callen-Lorde, we have continued to provide medically necessary treatment for transgender youth in accordance with the standards of care endorsed by major medical organizations and protected by the laws of New York.”

McGovern added, “We are grateful to Mayor Mamdani for supporting youth in their quest to live authentically. Since October of 2025, we have treated transgender youth using only private, non-federal funds. Funding from the City of New York is critical support for organizations and entities that are currently, and have been, providing affirming care for transgender youth.”

Since President Donald Trump took office again, gender-affirming care has been targeted by the federal government. He signed an executive order in 2025 that would bar federal funding to institutions providing gender-affirming care for trans youth.

The DOJ has subsequently targeted hospitals and clinics across the country, looking to crack down on gender-affirming care.
