Who Are ‘The Green Lesbians’ And Why Is Everyone Obsessed With Them?
What started as a short webcomic has become a sensation.
One of the internet’s favorite sapphic duos is making the leap from manga to anime. The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All—a mouthful of a title and better known among fans as ‘the green yuri’ or ‘the green lesbians’—has officially announced its anime adaptation.
The news came alongside the release of the manga’s third volume, a remarkable milestone considering the series’ relatively short run so far. With only three volumes out, the fact that an anime adaptation is already in the works speaks volumes about its impact. The official X account for the manga has amassed over 1.1 million followers, a testament to its devoted fanbase.

Creator Sumiko Arai shared the announcement with an emotional post on social media, writing: “VOL.3 is out & anime is happening. A few years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined a third book in bookstores, let alone an anime adaptation of this series. It’s so so touching and I’m so happy to be able to share the news with you guys :,) I hope it becomes something that’s loved worldwide by such a diverse & lovely audience like you guys. Thank you for always being a huge support, you made this happen!! So much love xx.”
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All started as a short story that Arai posted on her X account from July to September 2021. Its popularity led to serialization on Pixiv Comic in April 2023, and it wasn’t long before publisher Kadokawa Shoten picked it up for print. The series gained a reputation for its compelling storytelling and art, and for its signature green-tinted panels, earning it the affectionate nickname ‘the green yuri manga.’
The story follows high schooler Aya Oosawa, who harbors a crush on a ‘cool and mysterious guy’ she frequently sees at a local record store. As the title of the series so eloquently suggests, this effortlessly stylish music aficionado is actually Mitsuki Koga—a quiet, slightly awkward girl who just so happens to be Aya’s classmate. Mitsuki sits right next to Aya in class, forced to endure Aya’s lovesick ramblings about her supposed crush. As the two bond over their shared love of rock music (think Radiohead, Nirvana, Foo Fighters), their relationship slowly evolves from friendship to something much deeper.

The manga’s success has been meteoric, even winning the 2023 Next Manga Award in the web manga category. It was picked up for an English release by Yen Press, with the second volume having just dropped on February 18.
With the anime now in the works, fans are eagerly speculating on everything from the animation studio to the voice cast to the soundtrack. And while we won’t know for some time how closely the animation will adhere to the manga’s aesthetic, we’re going out on a limb and predict green. Lots of green.
