‘The Lesbian Project’ Protested By ‘The Dyke Project’

“Our community is beautiful precisely because it is made up of gender non-conforming lesbians, trans lesbians, non-binary lesbians, butches, studs, femmes, lesbians of all kinds who make up a tapestry more vibrant than you can imagine. Our community is beautiful because it is held together by love, not hate.”

The Lesbian Project is an initiative created by Kathleen Stock and Julie Bindel that seeks to “promote lesbian culture and history,” and to provide support and research for lesbian-focused organizations. The project has been criticized by some in the LGBTQ+ community, who argue that their mission is exclusionary and anti-trans.

The Lesbian Project held its first event in London over the weekend, and protestors from its pro-trans counterpart, The Dyke Project, showed up in full force.

According to their Twitter bio, The Dyke Project is “a collection of trans, cis, non-binary lesbians and queers of all persuasions who show that dykes are thriving.” In direct response to The Lesbian Project, The Dyke Project tweeted, “Some want to sow hate and divide us by saying lesbians are being erased & need protecting — so not true! We’re thriving and strongest when together.”

Aside from the protest, several LGBTQ+ advocacy groups signed an open letter to denounce The Lesbian Project as it does not serve “lives, needs and community” of lesbians. It was released by the Trans/Lesbian Solidarity Group late last week. The following is an excerpt from the letter:

“You claim that the word ‘lesbian’ has been ‘replaced’ by more ‘vague terms’. But we write this today as lesbians – whether or not you see us as such. Our community is beautiful precisely because it is made up of gender non-conforming lesbians, trans lesbians, non-binary lesbians, butches, studs, femmes, lesbians of all kinds who make up a tapestry more vibrant than you can imagine. Our community is beautiful because it is held together by love, not hate.”
