Taiwan Holds Fifth Pride Parade

"Rainbow Power" was the theme for this year’s gay pride parade in Taiwan.

Colored by this year’s theme of “Rainbow Power,” nearly 15,000 tongzhi—the Chinese term for sexual minorities including LGBT individuals—paraded through the eastern district of Taipei on Oct 13. The Taiwan Pride Parade, which first took place on Nov 1, 2003, remained the largest event in Asia that celebrates the LGBT community.

During the uncontained parade, in which participants shared the route with cars, bicycles and pedestrians, people were divided into seven groups wearing and holding seven different colors to form a large, living rainbow.

Taiwan, an island whose political status in relation to mainland China remains controversial, passed legislation banning discrimination against sexual orientation in 2007.
