A new anti-discrimination campaign in the Tuscany region in central Italy, sponsored by the Equal Opportunities Ministry, features a baby wearing a wristband that says “homosexual.” A twist on the hospital technique of identification for newborns, the posters assert the tagline, “Sexual Orientation is Not a Choice.” The campaign has been used previously in Quebec, Canada.
Vatican leaders, whose Roman Catholic Church regards homosexuality as a disorder, objected to the imagery of the campaign. Although gay activists tend to agree with the message that homosexuality is not a choice, some reportedly found the use of a baby in the advertisements to be disconcerting, according to Australia’s Herald Sun.
