‘Euphoria’ Season Three Is Finally In Production

Zendaya as Rue in 'Euphoria'

Three years after ‘Euphoria’ season two, HBO announced the show is back in production.

Euphoria is officially up and running to everyone’s surprise.

Fans got their first look at the show’s long-awaited return Monday with a photo of Rue (played by Zendaya) looking sullen in a dimly lit room. Classic Euphoria—all we’re missing is some glitter. “Season 3 is in production,” HBO promised. It’s about time!

The Emmy award-winning series has been on a three-year hiatus following season two’s cliffhanger finale. Rue still owes Laurie $50,000 over that suitcase, Ashtray died in a SWAT shootout, and don’t even get us started on Lexi’s play.

There are many rumored reasons behind the show’s long break. Namely, Euphoria‘s director, writer, and creative controller Sam Levinson, whose most recent project, The Idol, crashed and burned. As reported by Variety, HBO pressed pause last year after Levinson’s scripts for season three weren’t creatively in line with the show’s previous seasons. Levinson’s ideas included a five-year time jump for the teenagers. Ideas for Zendaya’s character post-high school seemed all over the place, from a private investigator to a pregnancy surrogate. Alongside a confusing narrative, Euphoria’s stars have catapulted in the industry since the show’s break, making scheduling a nightmare.

Euphoria‘s main cast, consisting of Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi, will all be returning. Storm Reid and Barbie Ferreira have both revealed they are saying goodbye to the show. Angus Cloud, who was just breaking into the industry with his role as Fezco, tragically passed away at the age of 25 in 2023.

With characters leaving and no word on the official plot, it’s unclear what direction season three will head in. We wouldn’t be mad at a time jump, considering the “high schoolers” are in their mid-to-late 20s by now. We do know season three will consist of eight episodes, which HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed in November.

Despite season one and two’s high ratings, it seems fans are not impressed with the show’s apparent comeback. In comments left on HBO’s Instagram, it was made clear that three years is just too long to wait.

“hey, we don’t want it anymore,” one comment, with over 8,000 likes, said.

“girl i don’t even know what you could do with this show at this point,” said another. Neither do we, but we will be tuning in either way.

No premiere date has been announced for Euphoria season three.
