100 Women We Love 2006

Meet the class of 2006

Ilene Chaiken

Pennsylvania’s own Chaiken put the lives of a close-knit group of LA lesbians in the spotlight when she created and executive-produced Showtime’s The L Word. Since the show debuted in 2003, it has sparked controversy and gained a massive audience of gay and straight viewers alike. “I believed that our stories would be entertaining and illuminating and appealing to a broad audience, including straight women and men,” said Chaiken. “We know we’ve only just scratched the surface representing the multitude of lesbian lives.” Currently, Chaiken lives in LA with her partner of over 20 years, and their twin daughters.
