GLAAD Partners With Twisted Comics for Graphic Novel Adaptation of ‘San Junipero,’ Black Mirror’s Beloved Sapphic Love Story

A decade after the Black Mirror episode “San Junipero” premiered, the lesbian love story is getting a new imagining in the form of a graphic novel developed by the United Kingdom-based Twisted Comics and supported by the LGBTQ+ media advocacy group GLAAD.

“San Junipero” premiered in the third season of Black Mirror, the Netflix anthology series.

It’s set in a neon-lit town that ends up being a simulated reality where the dead and dying can continue to exist.

The focus of the episode is on the queer love story of Yorkie, a shy woman visiting the simulation from her hospital bed, and Kelly, a more outgoing woman who’s been coming to San Junipero for years.

The women meet at a club, and they fall in love in the simulated existence.

“San Junipero” went on to win two Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Television Movie, as well as a GLAAD Media Award. It’s also very much a fan-favorite episode.

“Having a hopeful and joyous queer story in the midst of a dystopian series has resonated with audiences for ten years, and still does today,” GLAAD wrote in its announcement. “This has been a beautiful story, and we hope as many people as possible will get to read it and even share it with people who didn’t know they needed it.”

The release includes a foreword from GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, with 20% of net profits from the edition going toward GLAAD’s advocacy work. Fans who order before September 15 will have their names printed on a dedications page inside the book, which is expected to ship in October 2026.

“Queer love stories with happy endings are all too rare. It’s even rarer to find a beautiful love story between two women in the middle of a series that is more often than not bleak and unforgiving. The “San Junipero” episode of Black Mirror gave us this gift,” Raina Deerwater, associate director of entertainment research and analysis at GLAAD, said in a statement to GO. “Ten years later, that story resonates just as strongly. To see these queer women fall in love in the pages of a graphic novel evokes the same emotion as watching the episode all those years ago: that queer love is stronger than even death. GLAAD is proud to partner with Twisted Comics to bring this story to life in its new format.”
