WNBA Star Gabby Williams Speaks Out In Support Of Trans Inclusion In Sports
“I don’t think it’s a problem in the world,” Williams said.
WNBA star Gabby Williams is throwing her support behind the inclusion of trans athletes in sports.
While speaking with reporters this week, Williams, who plays for the Golden State Valkyries, said that she considers trans rights to be the “new battle” for athletes to fight.
“The environment has changed,” she said. “We see trans people’s rights being stripped away from them. There’s a lot of discourse around trans athletes and what they can compete in.”

“I would welcome a trans athlete on my team or against my team any time,” Williams concluded. “I don’t think it’s a problem in the world. It’s just another way to kind of attack trans people.”
The push against trans inclusion in sports has been going on for several years now, largely championed by conservatives in need of a new boogeyman to rally their base against.
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has been making waves in recent weeks with her own transphobic comments, insisting she wants to “protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls who shouldn’t have to go against biological men” before turning around and trying to claim she “is here to extend love.”
Never mind, of course, that trans people make up a small percentage of the population, an even smaller percentage of college athletes, and that very few compete on a professional level in any sport. And that’s not even getting into the utterly baseless insinuation that young girls need to be “protected” from trans people—or that the anti-trans crusade has led to a notable increase in hate crimes against trans people in recent years.
But the manufactured outrage against trans inclusion and trans rights continues to dominate conversation all the same. The only silver lining is that it’s also prompted people like Williams to take a stand in support of trans people and call out the fearmongering for exactly what it is.
