Transgender Man To Play NCAA Basketball profiles Kye Allums, the first openly transgender basketball player in the NCAA

A new feature profiles Kye Allums, a junior guard for George Washington University’s women’s basketball team and the first openly transgender person to play NCAA Division I college basketball.

Allums, who’d previously played on the team using his birth name, Kay Kay, changed his name earlier this year to reflect his identity as a transgender man.

“A name is just a bunch of letters, but the letters make up a word and the words that make up my name have so many more emotions behind them,” Allums said to’s Cyd Zeigler. “My old name, that’s just not me. When I hear Kye, everything feels okay, everything is right.”

Allums, who was born and raised in Minnesota, will introduce himself to NCAA basketball world at the Best Buy Classic in Minneapolis on Nov. 13.
