Yes, we are all bursting with excitement for the queer utopia where we are free to traipse around in our bikinis, chug rosé, meet hot girls from all over the world, and dance to about-to-top-the-charts entertainment. But it’s also important to know your queer history, ladies! Intelligence is sexy. So lez start with a lesson on the history of our beloved Dinah.

Mariah Hanson is the mastermind behind the world-famous, ultimate women’s weekend: The Dinah. She began her career in lesbian nightlife in 1988 when she debuted Club Skirts, a Sunday night dance party for San Francisco Bay-area women. She expanded to a Saturday dance club, The Girl Spot, which was open for 15 years. Once she got a taste of lezzie nightlife, she understandably wanted to keep it going, but on a larger scale. Thus, The Dinah was born.

“We hear tremendous stories every year of how The Dinah impacted lives in ways not imagined before they arrived. It’s an inspiring, magical event that creates a synergy amongst the attendees that translates to such a feel good, empowering experience. I have the best job in the world,” Mariah tells GO.

The Dinah was named after Dinah Shore, a legendary singer, TV personality, and golfer. She founded the Colgate-Dinah Shore Winner’s Circle, a golf tournament and (shocker!) major magnet for lesbian athletes and their fans. California dykes majorly digged the golf event, as large circles of lesbians could get together and… you know… play golf. That’s how Dinah Shore become a tongue-and-cheek lesbian identifier.

Each year gets better and better, and this year, a new party concept will launch. “The Friday night party will be over the top. Leikeli47 is performing that night, so it’s going to be an incredible event,” Hanson tells GO.

One of the most epic, groundbreaking parts of The Dinah is the talent. Up and coming talent is The Dinah’s trademark. Hanson has a gift for finding performers and DJs who are about to take the world by storm. Lady Gaga and Kesha performed at The Dinah before they skyrocketed to international superstar status. Last year, Brooke Candy graced The Dinah stage, and just like we predicted, she totally blew up. As for this year, we can expect the same level of iconicity.

“People are going to be blown away all weekend long at the quality of performances. But Kiana Lede who performs Sunday Poolside is going to be an artist that breaks out, and so she’s one I think people will look back on and go, ‘OMG, I saw her at The Dinah.’ I do want to offer talent that speaks to our diverse community, so I pick from several genres, but there is a method how I choose that is a bit proprietary. I’ve had great luck in picking the next big thing in music,” says Hanson. That great luck in picking is something we like to call “The Dinah Special Sauce.” Another headliner, Daya, is best known for her killer looks and hit singles Hide Away and Sit Still, Look Pretty.

Mariah tells us, “Daya’s performance alone is worth coming. She’s an amazing performer, and she is so excited to perform at The Dinah. She’s bringing her full concert, so expect an incredible show Saturday night at The Palm Springs Convention Center.”

We can also expect an amazing performance by rapper Leikeli47, who is popular for her signature ski mask and has had her music featured on the TV show Insecure. Other talent includes Kodie Shane, Diiamond Royalty, and Dorian Electra. Make sure to catch stand up performances by Fortune Feimster and Chaunteé Wayans. While you’re at the pool, keep an eye out for Shai Negrón, Bri Steves, and winner of Big Brother 20 Kaycee Clark, among other well-known queer women who will be in the sea of sexy sapphics.

Not surprisingly, The Dinah is going to have incredible DJs, including Angie V, GoodBoy, China G, Miss M, Citizen Jane, Val G, Lezlee, Asha, Skylar Madison, Bella Foxx, and Alex D. Every pool and every party will be surrounded by the hottest go-go dancers to keep the party going and keep your heart racing. Michelle King, Dinah’s public relations manager says, “We’re so excited about the eclectic and diverse lineup for this year’s Dinah! The best thing about this (and every) Dinah is that there’s something for everyone and we hope our guests leave with a new favorite artist.”

The vendor fairs, held at the pool parties, will be packed with your favorite companies including us GO girls. Grab your hot friends and bring them over to the GO table for some fun and goodies. The Dinah is sponsored by corporations and companies such as Tito’s, Bud Light, Bumble, White Girl Rosé, and of course, GO Magazine, so you already KNOW it’s going to be packed with the best liquor, ladies, and ~leisure activities.~ Besides being a blast, the Dinah also serves as a means to support queer women by having booths hosted by the National Center for Lesbian Rights, as well as working with some of the top LGBTQ players in arts and entertainment to heighten women’s visibility in film, TV and other media.

It’s not just the music, events, sponsors, and dancing that make The Dinah such a memorable experience. It’s the magic in the air. The Dinah is one of the littest parties I have ever witnessed in my life (and I professionally studied the sociology of nightlife! For real!) It is a unique mix that truly creates this environment of, well, magic.

What is the formula for the perfect party? “Beautiful women of all shapes and. sizes, a good attitude, and a frothy beverage,” Mariah tells us. We couldn’t agree more. She went on to say, “A good party is defined by the people who present it. I think any good promoter should share a sense of gratitude that we get to bring such celebration to people’s lives and an understanding that we are creating a sense of community that for so many can be life changing and/or live affirming. That realization needs to be taken seriously. I bring high intention to every Dinah I produce, and The Dinah attendees feel it.”

Our community around the world has recognized Hanson’s immense efforts to create the lesbian utopia of our dreams. She received the coveted key to the city of Palm Springs, presented by out Mayor Ron Oden in 1998.Hanson has appeared in GO’s “100 Women We Love” and the “Out 100,” and has received an impressive list of awards, including an Achievement Award with Lily Tomlin by NCLR in 2015.

For so many queer women, The Dinah represents something defining: either an annual tradition, that iconic episode of The L Word, a rite of passage, or a bucket list goal. This year, The Dinah celebrates its 29th anniversary and continues to shine as a haven for sisterhood, sex, life changing connections—and, of course, turning up poolside with hot lesbians.  See you there, babes.
