100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Marga Gomez

Comedian Marga Gomez is clearly unstoppable. This month alone she hosts the New York City Pride Rally, Boston Pride and San Francisco Pride. She’s also premiering her one-woman show, Long Island Iced Latina Off-Broadway and will appear on LOGO’s One Night Stand-Up. In August, Gomez will perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where she will, in her words, “put the tart in tartan.” A resident of San Francisco, she worked the phones during last year’s campaign to defeat Proposition 8. A strong believer in the power of laughter, Gomez created a weekly gay comedy night in San Francisco, providing a stage for emerging queer comics. “LGBT comedians are able to enlighten and disarm homophobes just by making them laugh,” she says. The showcase is now hosted by other comedians, but she’s proud that it has been going strong for over a year. “The more LGBT comics I can encourage, the higher they reach for the best material, the stronger our voice as a community becomes.” –CB

Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
