WNBA Star Breanna Stewart And Her Wife Targeted By Homophobic Threats
Breanna Stewart and her wife, Marta Xargay Casademont, recently received a terrifying email.
New York Liberty player Breanna Stewart and her wife, Marta Xargay Casademont, received a terrifying email, filled with slurs and death threats.
Casademont, a former professional basketball player, reported the anonymous message to the NYPD’s 78th Precinct on Thursday, according to an exclusive report from the New York Post.
“I hope someone shoots your wife dead, f**k you d**es, I hope you both die,” the message allegedly threatened, among other things.
The email address associated with this threat has also been connected to a variety of other hateful messages, including “death threats, bomb threats, and more racist rhetoric,” sources told the Post.
The New York Liberty have not commented on the hateful email.
Last month, the WNBA addressed a rise in racist and derogatory threats following the harassment of Connecticut Sun player DiJonai Carrington. Carrington reportedly received a threatening email after she accidentally gave Indiana Fever player Caitlin Clark a black eye during the playoffs in September. The email contained “racist, misogynistic and violent language,” according to the Indy Star. This email has not been connected to the email sent to Stewart’s family.
“While we welcome a growing fan base, the WNBA will not tolerate racist, derogatory, or threatening comments made about players, teams and anyone affiliated with the league,” the league stated in September. “League security is actively monitoring threat-related activity and will work directly with teams and arenas to take appropriate measures, to include involving law enforcement as necessary.”
Sun forward Alyssa Thomas also spoke out about derogatory fans during a postgame interview.
“It’s unacceptable, honestly,” Thomas said. “There’s no place for it. We’ve been professional throughout the whole entire thing, but I’ve never been called the things that I’ve been called on social media.”
Neither Stewart nor Casademont have commented on the homophobic email. The two have been married since 2021 and have two children, Ruby Mae and Theo Josep.
Stewart is currently competing in the WNBA finals, where the New York Liberty are facing off against Minnesota Lynx. The series is tied 1-1.
