Video Of The Day: Sad Girl Country Goes Queer As Julien Baker & Torres Debut New Song On ‘The Daily Show’
The indie darlings are going full twang, and their ‘Daily Show’ performance proves we’re not ready for the heartbreak.
Country music has been getting a whole lot gayer, and we couldn’t be more here for it. Indie rock powerhouses Julien Baker and Torres are the latest queer artists to embrace the genre, and took The Daily Show stage last night to debut their brand-new duet, “Bottom of a Bottle”, from their upcoming country album Send a Prayer My Way, out April 18. Trading aching harmonies and twangy guitar licks, the longtime friends and frequent collaborators are proving that sad girl country can definitely still spark joy.

Before their performance, the artists explained to host Michael Costa that the album has been in the works for five years and draws on their shared religious upbringings. “I think there’s this idea that you talk about a practice of a prayer, you’re talking about a dogmatic religious belief. But I feel like organized religion is not necessarily the same thing. It maybe often gets in the way of pursuit of the divine,” Baker explained.
The song is a slow-burn stunner, with Baker and Torres’ voices intertwining like a last-call confession at a smoky dive bar. It’s country, it’s queer, and it’s absolutely going to ruin you in the best way.
