Video Of The Day: Lorde Channels Masculinity And Rebirth In Stunning New Single

In “Man Of The Year,” Lorde steps into a new version of herself with a video that blurs lines.
Lorde’s new video for “Man Of The Year” marks a striking chapter in her artistic evolution, pairing intimate visuals with big questions about identity. With her chest taped down and her body moving through an empty, dirt-floored apartment, she brings us to a place that resists neat definitions of gender and self.
In a recent Rolling Stone profile, Lorde reflects on a conversation she had with Chappell Roan: “She was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now?’ And I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.’ I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.”

Co-written with Jim-E Stack and featuring Dev Hynes, aka Blood Orange, on cello, the track swells from minimalism into a sonic storm. Her visual language—sunlight, soil, chain, chest tape—is hard to read as anything but autobiographical. “Man Of The Year” seems to be a rebirth, not into someone new, but perhaps into someone she’s always been.
