Not even a hussy named Irene could keep gays from their appointed rounds. When the monster hurricane slithered up the east coast during the week of August 21, and wreaked increasing havoc with every landfall, New Yorkers braced for impact. City slickers stocked up on so many bottles of water, D batteries and flashlights that entire stores were picked clean. But the Stonewall Inn, which has weathered more than just rain and wind in its long life, simply boarded up the windows and hung out the rainbow flags to let everyone know they were open as usual. While the storm thundered outside, a hurricane party raged on indoors.
